A terrarium is not a pot. It does not get flushed, leached, or repotted. The substrate has to manage moisture, drainage, nutrient cycling, and biological activity simultaneously — for years — without intervention.
Most substrates were never designed for that. They compact within 18 to 24 months, waterlog from the base up, and accumulate waste in sealed environments where nothing can flush it out. When they fail, they take the ecosystem you built down with them.

What's Inside
• Coco Coir, Fine — Moisture-retentive base that holds water evenly without compacting or going hydrophobic under sustained humidity. Near-neutral pH supports the biological stack throughout the life of the build.
• Tree Fern Fiber — The ABG gold-standard structural component. Fibrous, slow-decaying, and resistant to compaction — maintains pore space and root-anchoring surfaces that mosses, ferns, and epiphytes actively colonize.
• Fine Fir Bark — Primary drainage scaffold. Creates macro-scale channels throughout the profile and resists breakdown longer than standard bark mixes — maintaining the structure that would collapse in a generic organic substrate within two years.
• Long Fiber Sphagnum Moss — Distributes moisture laterally instead of allowing it to pool in stagnant layers. Naturally produces sphagnan, an antimicrobial compound that passively suppresses the bacterial activity that turns high-humidity zones sour.
• Horticultural Grit — Permanent, angular, inorganic drainage points in the lower substrate layers where pooling risk is highest. Zero decomposition rate — the structure at setup is the structure in year five.
• Reptibark Fines — Fills the gap between larger structural components, supports microfauna movement throughout the substrate, and contributes to the multi-scale drainage architecture. Among the slowest-degrading bark inputs available.
• Zeolite — Captures ammonium, calcium, magnesium, and potassium and releases them slowly as plant-available nutrition rather than allowing accumulation in a sealed environment where nutrients have nowhere to leach.
• Coco Chips — Creates macro air pockets that resist compaction through repeated saturation and drying cycles. Keeps the substrate profile open and breathable for the life of the build.
• Biochar — Protected micropore habitat for beneficial bacteria and fungi — surface area orders of magnitude beyond conventional horticultural charcoal. Also adsorbs organic toxins generated by decomposition in sealed environments before buildup becomes a problem.
• Worm Castings — Microbial diversity and direct nutrition for springtail and isopod colonies from day one. Natural mucilage coating helps bind the substrate matrix and reduce stratification over time.
• Coarse Vermiculite — Reserve moisture buffer. Absorbs excess water during heavy watering events and releases it gradually, smoothing the wet-dry swings that stress sensitive terrarium plants and microfauna.
Best for: Closed planted terrariums, bioactive vivariums, dart frog enclosures, amphibian builds, moss terrariums, jewel orchid displays, Fittonia and Peperomia builds, isopod and springtail cultures — any closed or semi-closed system where substrate performance needs to hold for years, not months.
Not recommended for: Desert terrariums, arid enclosures, cacti, succulents, or Mediterranean herbs.
How to use: Layer 2–3 inches for closed terrariums and planted builds. Layer 3–4 inches for vivariums and amphibian enclosures. Do not compress. Allow plants to establish 1–2 weeks before introducing microfauna. Top-dress with leaf litter quarterly in bioactive builds.
Non-toxic to plants, amphibians, reptiles, springtails, and isopods. Natural pH 5.5–6.5.
