Built for the Way Calathea and Maranta Actually Grow

Calathea and maranta are native to the tropical rainforest floor. They grow beneath the forest canopy where light is filtered and diffused, humidity is constantly high, and the soil is a rich tapestry of decomposing organic matter that stays consistently moist — but never compacted or stagnant.

Unlike many tropical houseplants that tolerate or even prefer drying between waterings, calathea do not. They are deeply sensitive to moisture inconsistency. Their roots expect a continuously moist environment, and when the substrate dries out — even briefly — they respond with curling leaves, crispy margins, and stress that can take weeks to recover from.

But moist does not mean wet. The forest floor is loose, well-aerated organic matter — not compacted, saturated soil. Calathea & Maranta Mix replicates that balance. This is the most moisture-retentive mix in our lineup, formulated to hold consistent hydration while maintaining the structural openness that keeps roots oxygenated and healthy.

How This Mix Performs Differently

Consistent moisture — the foundation of calathea care

Calathea are among the most moisture-sensitive houseplants available. This mix maintains consistent hydration throughout the root zone between waterings — reducing the moisture swings that cause the leaf curling, crispy edges, and stress responses calathea are known for.

Aerated even at high moisture levels

Fine perlite, coarse perlite, and fir bark maintain oxygen pathways throughout a moisture-rich mix — preventing the stagnant, compacted conditions that develop in dense soils as they stay wet. Roots stay hydrated and oxygenated simultaneously.

Sphagnum moss for humidity at the root level

Sphagnum provides the naturally antimicrobial, moisture-stable environment that calathea roots thrive in — holding water while maintaining a humidity microclimate around delicate feeder roots that mimics the moist organic matter of the forest floor.

Nutrient stability in a high-watering environment

Calathea are moderate feeders that appreciate consistent nutrition. Zeolite buffers nutrient availability by capturing and slowly releasing minerals between waterings — preventing the deficiency cycles that develop when nutrients flush too quickly.

The Calathea & Maranta Mix Ingredient System

•      Coco Coir — The moisture-retentive base — holds water evenly and consistently across the root zone, supporting the continuous hydration calathea and maranta roots require without compacting.

•      Sphagnum Moss — Provides deep, stable moisture retention and a naturally antimicrobial environment around delicate roots — mimicking the organic, moisture-rich conditions of the tropical forest floor.

•      Fir Bark — Adds structural aeration and open pore space — preventing compaction and keeping the mix breathable even at higher moisture levels.

•      Fine Perlite — Improves drainage uniformity and prevents waterlogging throughout this moisture-rich mix — maintaining oxygen availability without stripping the moisture retention calathea require.

•      Perlite #3 — Adds larger oxygen channels and drainage pathways — balancing the moisture-retentive components and keeping the mix from becoming dense or stagnant over time.

•      Zeolite — Captures and slowly releases calcium, magnesium, and potassium — maintaining consistent nutrient availability in a high-moisture environment where nutrients can otherwise become inconsistent over time.

•      Biochar — Supports long-term microbial activity and root-zone biological stability — improving mix health throughout the plant's life.

•      Worm Castings — Introduce beneficial microorganisms and a rich, plant-available baseline of nutrition suited to calathea's moderate nutritional needs.

•      Humic Acid — Improves nutrient uptake efficiency at the root surface — helping calathea absorb more from every feeding in a consistently moist environment.

•      Mycorrhizae — Extend the root system through beneficial fungal networks — supporting faster establishment after repotting and improved access to water and nutrients.

Ideal For

Calathea orbifolia, Calathea medallion, Calathea ornata, Calathea makoyana, Calathea roseopicta, Calathea zebrina, Maranta leuconeura (all varieties), Ctenanthe setosa, Stromanthe sanguinea, and all other members of the Marantaceae family grown as houseplants. Also well-suited to other moisture-loving tropical plants that prefer persistently humid root conditions.

Indoor Growing Behavior

Calathea & Maranta Mix is the most moisture-retentive blend in our lineup, intentionally designed to stay evenly moist between waterings. This mix should not be allowed to dry out fully — water when the surface of the mix is just beginning to dry, keeping the root zone consistently moist but never waterlogged.

Small-Batch Crafted

Every batch is carefully mixed by hand using premium ingredients selected specifically for indoor houseplants and modern container growing. When you buy from Britney's Urban Oasis, you're buying from real plant people who formulate, test, and use these products themselves — and stand behind everything they make.
